Design for Manufacturability Spotlight
Product Concept to Realization

A local start-up selected Profile to manufacture their patent-pending Optical Iron Sight, an aftermarket handgun accessory that allows faster aiming of a pistol in defensive situations.

Developed initially for use with Glock®, the original design of the oxide-coated steel rear sight frame was rectangular in shape, mimicking the profile of these semi-automatics.

Its 3D printed prototype was provided with the request for quote, and upon our design for manufacturability review, we discussed with our customer the challenges which would hinder cost-effective production parts.

Since internal square corners are difficult and time-consuming to machine, a round profile would be more economical, and permit a round mating part- the sight “glass”.  This mating part would also be more economical to manufacture, would slip fit into the frame- alleviating the need for epoxy, and provide for easier replacement if ever damaged.

Rather than actual glass, the sight glass is manufactured from a scratch resistant, optically clear acrylic which is more durable for the application.  The reticle of the sight glass also evolved during the DFM process.  Instead of a dot on each side of and in-line with the aperture, a simple circle was placed concentric to its diameter, eliminating the need for orientation.

The final product-  shown in inset above, resembles a target itself, visually lending well to users, thus aiding functionality.  And that, to them, is likely the true test of quality!
