Precision Grinding

Components having complex geometries or featural relationships which cannot be managed by the centerless grinding process lend themselves well to precision CNC ID/OD grinding, although, given its broader scope of set up, is generally less economical then the centerless method.

Precision ID/OD grinding provides better part-to-part consistency over similar, alternative turning processes, especially for parts with size, roundness, concentricity, and surface finish requirements.

CNC ID/OD grinding also offers the ability to grind a component’s internal features.

Profile specializes in precision cylindrical grinding– that is, precision grinding inside diameters (IDs) and outside diameter (ODs) of cylindrical parts, excelling at those with multiple features, such as grooves, radii, and tapers. In some cases, form grinding may be utilized, where the component’s profile is formed directly into the grinding wheel.

We utilize workholding methods which obtain efficient material removal for each part feature, while maintaining repeatable accuracy. These include internal (ID) grinding and external (OD) grinding workholding, as well as between-centers workholding.

Between-centers workholding provides support of the workpiece, particularly for components with high diameter-to-length ratios. However, designing centers into almost any cylindrical part will likely improve quality and cycle time if they allow all ground features to be processed in one operation rather than several.

Face grinding and limited surface grinding and honing services are also available should specifications demand.
